Sink Depth - The definitive answer

The question of sink depth comes up frequently. Sink depth depends on two things; your height and the type of sink you are considering. If you are considering an outdated sink such as; a double bowl, or a sink with a drain in the middle or the rear center, you will require a deeper sink than we recommend for our sinks. You see, with the above types of sinks, the large items that do not fit inside a dishwasher will not fit inside these sinks. If the item does happen to fit, it will surely cover the drain. So... the most common method of cleaning in these sinks is to place the item, at an angle, inside the bowl. Scraping, scrubbing and washing will only be done on the half that is inside the bowl - hence the need for a deeper bowl. Once the item is clean on the bottom half, we generally spin the item around and do the same process on that half. Once both parts are clean, the rinsing juggling act begins. We, right handed people, hold the item in our left hand while rinsing the bottom half with our right hand holding either a side spray or a pull out faucet. If we have neither, then the juggling act gets even messier. We have to hold the item over the sink like the old wooden labyrinth game some of us played with in our youth. We try to rinse without getting water all over the countertop or ourselves.

Now comes the smart sink, a Rachiele exclusive:

Simply use a large single bowl sink, with a right rear drain, and you can place everything that needs washing totally inside the sink for scrubbing, washing and rinsing. No more covering the drain and accidentally begin the process of unintentionally filling the sink with dirty water because a pot or pan is sitting on the drain. Since you will be working at the bottom of the sink almost all of the time, we recommend a shallower sink. Most sinks should never be deeper than 8". You can read about our recommended sink depths on our "Sink Ergonomics" page.
