Clearly, there are some that would like to clean up as they prepare a meal. Accomplishing that, in most cases, is often frustrating. A family where two persons would like to prepare or clean up together also would find a traditional sink difficult - or impossible, to use with efficiency. Those reasons, and many others, led me to introduce the very first workstation single bowl sinks with two drains over a year ago. This was not an easy feat. It was inherently important to ensure that the water from one side did not flow to the other side. One of the two most important factors in the design of all of our custom sinks is that the bottoms of the sink should slope toward the drain. To accomplish this in a dual drain single bowl sink for two right handed users (shown above),have the far left side shallower than the drain side. To the right of the left drain, the bottom steps upward at a 90 degree angle, stopping water flow to the right sink. That step becomes the shallow side for the right side of the sink. When we build a sink for a right handed and left handed couple, there is a drain in the far left rear corner and far right corner. The bottom of the sink, in that case, is "V" shaped, causing water to, again, stay in each section.

This design idea came about when I had a young couple who indicated they wanted a 60" sink and wanted to prepare meals together. The caveat was that he was right handed and she was left handed. In the past, one of the two would have been inconvenienced. I often suggested the one that did the most cleanupwould be the one to have the drain on their side, as one would have to work with their nondominant hand to scrub and scrape dishes. The one that did the most food prep would easily be able to rearrange the grid and cutting board to suit his or her handedness.

We had to think of a name for this design and quickly settled on Harmony™, as it allowed for harmonious use of the sink.

The Harmony™ design offers three inherent advantages. It permits single-person food preparation and cleanup without cross-contamination across the bowl. Secondly, it accommodates both right and left-handed individuals, enabling them to work in tandem, considerate of their handedness. Lastly, it facilitates efficient work in very long sinks by eliminating the need to push debris across large distances to the drain—saving both time and water.

My goal, in the design of every sink, is simple. I want the sink to be as efficient and timesaving as possible for each family, based on their specific family dynamics. I want the sink to be as ergonomically comfortable to use as possible. Lastly, I want to create a sink that is fun to use. Food preparation and cleanup should not be a chore; they should be fun!
