Ideal Kitchen Sink Depth by Height - Why Most Sinks Are Too Deep

Most people assume deeper is better when it comes to kitchen sinks. It isn't. In fact, the standard 9 to 10 inch sink depth that the industry has sold for decades is one of the leading causes of back and shoulder strain in the kitchen. Here's what 27 years of designing ergonomic sinks has taught me about depth - and why the right number might surprise you.

Ergonomics and the ideal kitchen sink depth.

Finding the Perfect Kitchen Sink Depth for Comfort and Efficiency

When designing your kitchen, one detail that can make a huge difference is the depth of your sink. At Rachiele Custom Sinks, we focus on making sure your kitchen is not only beautiful but also comfortable and easy to use. Here’s how to choose the best sink depth for you.

Why Sink Depth Matters

The depth of your sink affects how you interact with it every day. If your sink is too deep, you might find yourself bending over too much, which can lead to back and shoulder pain. On the other hand, if your sink is too shallow, it might not provide enough space for washing larger items and could cause more splashing.

Choosing the Right Sink Depth for Your Height

We’ve created a handy chart to help you pick the ideal sink depth based on your height. Whether you’re using a Rachiele® sink or a traditional double bowl or center drain sink, the right depth can make a big difference in your comfort.

Things to Consider: The No Spin Zone

A common misconception is that deeper sinks are better. However, an ergonomically designed sink with a rear corner drain can be both shallower and more functional. Here’s why:

No More Dish-Washing Spin Routine: With a poorly designed sink, you're often washing items half in and half out of the sink, leading to the tedious "spin" routine"—washing one half, then spinning the item to wash the other half. In a Rachiele sink, you can place virtually any pot, pan, or platter right down inside the sink without covering the drain, eliminating the need for spinning. You work at the bottom of the sink all the time, so a deep sink becomes unnecessary and even inconvenient.

Ergonomic Efficiency: Most sinks are under mounted under stone or a solid surface, effectively making a 9-inch deep sink about 10 1/4 inches deep. This depth means you are working at a lower level than is comfortable. Consider this: the standard countertop height of 36 inches is designed for comfort. Subtracting 10 1/4 inches from that makes you work at the bottom of the sink, at a height of 25 3/4". Try writing a letter while standing on a desk that is 25 3/4" high; it won't be long before you feel the strain in your back.

Making Your Kitchen Work for You

Choosing the right sink depth helps ensure that you can stand comfortably while washing dishes or preparing food.

Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Posture: The right sink depth will help you maintain a natural posture, so you’re not hunching over.

Reach: You should be able to easily reach the bottom of the sink without bending too much.

Task Efficiency: Consider how you use your sink in relation to your faucet. Do you have to bend or reach to get your hands under the water flow? This kind of hunching over to wash dishes, pots, and pans can be very uncomfortable and can lead to strain over time. The design of your faucet plays a crucial role in your overall kitchen ergonomics.

Waterstone's extended-reach faucets are specifically designed to enhance your comfort and efficiency in the kitchen. These faucets are engineered to drop the water right in the center of our wide 18" bowls, ensuring you don't have to reach awkwardly. With an impressive 11 1/8" reach spout, these faucets offer a significant advantage over most other brands.

Splash Concerns: Some worry that a shallower sink might lead to more splashing. However, this is one more reason why we partner with Waterstone Faucets, ensuring that our sinks are designed to minimize splashing while maximizing comfort and efficiency.

Waterstone's pull-down spray feature is designed to minimize splashing, making your kitchen cleanup smoother and more efficient. This thoughtful design reduces the need to constantly adjust your position or the angle of your utensils under the water flow, allowing you to work more naturally and comfortably. By integrating such features, Waterstone faucets help create a kitchen environment that supports better posture and reduces the risk of discomfort or injury.
