How I Reversed 30 Years of Diabetes in My 70s

For more than thirty years, I lived as a diabetic. I took the medications, I followed the guidance I was given, and I accepted that this was simply going to be part of my life for good. I was wrong.
In my seventies now, I am off every one of my diabetes medications. I have lost over one hundred pounds. I train at the gym on a regular basis, and in many ways, I am as strong as people in their forties. None of this happened through a new prescription. It happened because I changed what I eat.
Finding the Proper Human Diet
I did not arrive at this overnight. After three decades of managing diabetes the conventional way, I started looking seriously at what is often called the proper human diet, an eating approach built around animal foods. I found my way to it through Kerry Mann's videos on HomeSteadHow. Watching his content is what first guided me toward eating this way, and I believe it likely saved my life. I went completely carnivore. I will admit it sounded extreme to me too, at first. But the change in my own body was undeniable, and it came faster than I expected.
Why I'm Sharing This
I built this company on one idea: to be helpful to people. That has been true since my earliest days designing kitchens, straight through to inventing the workstation sink and every sink my artisans and I have crafted since. A kitchen, and the sink at its center, is where every meal in a home actually begins. So when I decided to share something this personal, it felt right that it should live here, in my own words.
I am not a doctor, and nothing here is medical advice. This is my own experience, told honestly. If you are considering a significant change like this yourself, please talk with your own doctor first.
A Conversation That Started This Blog
A couple of weeks ago, I sat down with Kerry Mann of HomeSteadHow to talk about my health journey. In its first two days alone, that conversation passed ten thousand views. Kerry has his own remarkable story, including his own reversal of diabetes and a lifelong heart arrhythmia that had puzzled doctors for years. I will let him tell that story in his own words rather than mine. You can watch our full conversation here:
Near the end of that video, I mentioned I would be starting a blog to share more of this journey, and I gave out my website address on camera. If that is how you found your way here, welcome. This is the first of what I intend to be an ongoing series, one post at a time.
I won't pretend this was smooth from the start. I failed more than once trying to make this stick. What finally turned it around wasn't willpower, it was a paradigm shift, a real epiphany that changed how I saw food entirely.
Being Italian, food had always meant pasta, bread, the table my whole family gathered around. Letting go of that felt impossible at first. But the shift that happened in my thinking didn't just allow me to change how I eat, it put me in a place where I have no desire to ever go back to the way I used to eat.
Thank you all for the incredible response to this blog. This is the first of many blogs where I'll be posting regular updates on my progress, including the details behind the changes I talked about here. I will also be putting links to interesting YouTube videos by carnivore doctors and carnivore enthusiasts. I'm happy to answer questions in the comments as they come up, with one honest caveat: I'm not a doctor, and nothing I share is medical advice, just my own experience. You may email questions and comments to dino@rachiele.com
If you ever want to talk about a kitchen built around the life you're actually living, my goal has always been to design a sink that fits your lifestyle, not the other way around. You can learn more about me here.
