At Rachiele Custom Sinks, we understand that the unique charm of a copper sink is a significant draw for many of our customers. However, we also know that some might be hesitant due to concerns about maintenance. Let us put those fears to rest—caring for your copper sink is straightforward, and even if the patina changes, it can be beautifully restored.

Caring for Your Copper Sink

Copper sinks from Rachiele are remarkably easy to care for. The natural patina that develops over time is part of the sink’s allure, giving it a living finish that evolves with your home. To maintain the beauty of your copper sink, follow these simple tips:

  • Avoid Leaving Items in the Sink: Items left sitting in the sink, like pots or silverware, can cause dark marks on the copper. These are not permanent and can often add to the character of the sink.

  • Be Mindful of Acidic Foods: Acidic foods like salad dressings or lemon juice can lighten the patina temporarily. This is no cause for concern—the patina will naturally darken again over time, continuing to add depth and warmth to your copper sink.

Restoring the Patina

In case your copper sink's patina does need a refresh—perhaps due to an overzealous cleaning or a well-intentioned gift of polishing—restoration is simple. Here’s a guide to restoring the original luster of your Rachiele Custom Sink:

  1. Clean the Sink: Start by ensuring your sink is oil-free. We recommend using Dawn soap for a thorough clean. This step is crucial, as the patina won’t adhere well to a greasy surface.

  2. Prepare Your Materials: You'll need a small natural sea sponge, household vinegar, and optionally, a spray bottle. These tools will help you apply the vinegar evenly and gently.

  3. Apply Vinegar: Dampen the sponge with vinegar and dab it across the sink, focusing on areas that need patina restoration. Avoid letting the sponge drip to prevent uneven marks.

  4. Let It Dry: Allow the sink to dry between applications. You might notice a green patina forming—this is exactly what you want. Repeat the application 3 to 4 times.

  5. Finish the Process: Once the sink is mostly green, wet the sponge with water and gently rub the dried patina. This should form a soapy, pasty layer. After about 5-15 minutes, rinse thoroughly with water.

That's it! Your sink should now reflect the rich, varied hues that copper is known for. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to call us or watch this helpful VIDEO. For a PDF printable version of these instructions, please visit our ABOUT COPPER page.
