Over the years I have had customers call me with a similar frustration. They have bought a luxury home and then discovered that their sink is inefficient and poorly made. Some contractors install standard double bowl sinks because they are inexpensive and readily available. Unfortunately, they are also impractical. When I speak to homeowners, many have made a significant investment in their kitchens, selecting specialty cabinets and custom countertops. Now, they are faced with a difficult decision: live with an inferior sink or spend a substantial amount of money correcting the problem.

Fortunately, I have patented a retrofit sink design, which can simplify the process and lessen the financial impact by allowing you to install your sink over existing cabinetry. However, I strongly encourage anyone who is starting to build a home or planning a remodel to talk to your contractor. Make sure that you get a sink that fits your needs, not just your budget.

Too often, people assume that a sink is just a basin for washing dishes. In reality, it is the most used workstation in the entire kitchen. Every meal begins and ends at the sink, whether you are washing produce, filling a stock pot, thawing seafood, or cleaning up after dinner. When the sink is well designed, everything around it feels easier and more efficient. When the sink is poorly designed, you feel the frustration several times each day.

A workstation sink can eliminate unnecessary steps, reduce cleanup time, and improve workflow in ways homeowners rarely expect. Cutting, rinsing, prepping, and cleaning can all be done in a single controlled area rather than spread across countertops. When people make the switch from a standard bowl to a properly designed workstation configuration, I often hear the same comment. They say they wish they had known about it before the cabinets and countertops were installed.

A kitchen is an investment in how you live, entertain, and spend time with family. Choosing the right sink will influence that experience for decades. My advice is simple. Select a sink based on functionality and longevity instead of simply accepting what comes with a cabinet package. If you are planning a renovation, take the time to research options and speak with a manufacturer who understands kitchen ergonomics. It is far easier to do it once and do it right.

With thoughtful planning you can create a kitchen that supports the way you cook, instead of forcing you to work around limitations. And if you are already past the cabinetry stage and feeling disappointed in the sink you inherited, know that you still have options. A retrofit workstation sink may give you the performance and efficiency you expected from your home in the first place.
